In 2015 scientists discovered that natural coral was ingesting micro-plastics, poisoning itself in the process. Next to acidification and the rise in ocean temperatures, this is one of the main reasons why the Great Barrier Reef is disappearing. Ecocide is a reference to the potential destruction of an entire ecosystem by human activity for the first time ever. At the same time it presents an alternative future life of plastic, feeding on itself and gradually growing and thriving in a closed environment, just like theĀ terrariums or sealed bottle ecosystems that became increasingly popular in the 1960s.
